If you send bulk SMS messages, there must be a way for customers to easily opt out.
There are multiple ways to resolve this:
- SMS reply – all sent SMS messages without an alphanumeric sender ID have a reserved “channel” and can be replied to within 24 hours of sending. Replies to sent SMS can be found in the campaign details. If a reply contains a keyword, e.g. stop, don’t send, unsubscribe, cancel, etc., that phone number will be automatically unsubscribed from future campaigns. We recommend adding to the end of the message something like “Unsubscribe: Reply STOP”.
If you want to send bulk SMS using an alphanumeric sender ID, you must use one of the other methods listed below. This SMS cannot be replied to. - Custom unsubscribe landing page – upon request we can create a custom LP where a user or colleague enters a phone number and we’ll unsubscribe that number. If the LP is publicly accessible, we recommend enabling double opt-out, where we verify the SMS sent to confirm the correct phone number is being unsubscribed (similar to double opt-in when confirming an email newsletter subscription).
- Adding a link to SMS – we can create a link that will be unique for each SMS and allow recipients to opt out simply by clicking the link in the SMS. The link may take up extra characters (typically 32), so keep that in mind when composing your message.
